Connecting my Work to Others

                                                                    Damien Hirst

This image by Damien Hirst and my image show a few similarities. Firstly, the subjects are entirely the same, showing female dominance in an exotic, wild way. This is done through the use of snakes. Another similarity between the two image is how natural it is in some respects. For instance, there is nothing happening around the models, their makeup is quite neutral. Another similarity of the two images is the fact that Rihanna looks naked in Damien Hirsts images, and in some images from my shoot, Rhiannon looks naked as you cannot see her clothes, which is shown above. Although the colours in the two images are different, for example Damien Hirsts image is quite desaturated, whereas mine in comparison is quite bright and colourful. This is the case with this image, but in terms of the shoot overall, there are some that mimic the colours slightly with some being desaturated and dark. Both images show the female subjects as powerful due to the composition, camera angle, and expressions.
                                                                 Chuck Grant

This image from Chuck Grant and my own show a few similarities. Firstly, both show quite patriotic themes, with Chuck Grants showing very American themes, and my own showing British themes. Another similarity is the simplicity of how the models look, with both looking very normal, and not overdone which gives the image a more relateable, natural and intimate feel. For example the barely there makeup, and the models are wearing a bra/vest top. Although these images are very similar in the patriotic sense and how the model looks, the composition and layouts are different. For example, the image from Chuck Grant has a military feel with her in front of the flag which acts as a background, whereas my image shows a more relaxed composition with the flag barely seen in the background, but obvious enough to show it has significance. Also, the colours are different, with Chuck's image looking quite desaturated which gives it a vintage, film camera feel whereas mine is brighter and has more intense colours.
Iain Crawford

This image by Iain Crawford shows a few similarities to my shoot, mainly through the use of balloons. Both images show the use of balloons to give a softer, more fun and girly effect. Another similarity in these two images is the composition, with the balloons and models filling the compositions. Also, the colours are similar in the respect that both images show pastel, girly colours. The only difference with the colours is that the image by Iain Crawford is bolder and more saturated, with mine being brighter. Although there is similarities there are also differences between the two images. For example, the one by Crawford shows more 60's themes with mine showing more girly, less serious themes. Another difference is how identity is being shown, with my image showing the models face almost in full, and the image by Crawford shows just the models lips.
Lois Greenfield
Dance Photography:

This image by Lois Greenfield and my own show quite a few obvious similarities. Firstly, both images show ballet as the subject and portray it in motion to show it in a more natural, realistic way. Secondly, through ballet and movement form is shown, which is accentuated by the use of black and white editing. The poses are also similar, with both ballerinas stretching out their bodies which fills the composition  more as well as showing form better. Another similarity is the shadowed background created by the types of lighting used, for example I used only one light on the left of the composition creating shadow behind the ballerina. There are differences in these images as well, such as composition and how the model looks. The compositions are the most obvious differences, with Lois Greenfield's model central to the composition but has space around the model, whereas my composition is tighter showing the model completely stretching across the composition.
                                                           Terry Richardson

This image by Terry Richardson and my own shows a few similarities. For example, both images show similar lighting, with both being quite bright although Terry Richardson's being slightly shadowed around the edges. The subjects show similarities with both images looking fun and informal. The use of sweet food in both as well helps to create a more fun, and exiting shoot. Although the ideas of the shoot are the same, as well as the lighting, there are also differences. For example, the compositions are obviously different with Terry Richardson's image showing the subject to the right of the composition and a gap between the edge and her head, whereas mine shows the subject central and fitting quite tight in the composition with the top of her head outside it.
